Nature-Lover’s Paradise
The Exploits Region boasts a beautiful natural environment with diverse landscapes and wildlife. The Exploits Valley, formed by glaciation, is a prominent feature of the region and is home to the Exploits River, which flows eastward through the valley and is framed by low hills from the high plateau in the center of the island. The lower part of the valley is host to a dense, primarily evergreen forest and is home to large mammals such as moose, caribou, and black bears.
The natural environment of the Exploits Region is also characterized by its proximity to several parks and trails, including the Bay d’Espoir Wilderness Reserve and the Corduroy Brook Nature Trail. These areas provide opportunities for hiking, fishing, kayaking, and more, allowing visitors to experience the region’s natural beauty firsthand.

Getting Here & Getting Around
Airports
Visitors flying to Newfoundland and Labrador can access the Exploits Region through several airports. Gander International Airport is the closest major airport, about one hour east of Grand Falls-Windsor. St. John’s International Airport, the province’s largest airport, is about four hours southeast, while Deer Lake Regional Airport is about three and a half hours west.
Ferries
Visitors travelling by ferry can reach Newfoundland through Marine Atlantic’s service between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. Another route is the ferry connection between St. Barbe, Newfoundland and Blanc-Sablon, Quebec. From there, visitors can continue by road toward the Exploits Region.
Once You’re Arrived
The Exploits Region is best explored by vehicle, especially for visitors travelling between communities, trails, attractions, accommodations, and coastal areas. Rental cars and taxis may be available in larger centres, but public transit can be limited in rural areas. In winter, visitors should check road conditions, plan ahead, and allow extra travel time.
